Apply the knowledge of mathematics, natural science, computing and engineering fundamentals to develop solutions to solve complex engineering problems.

Problem Analysis

Identify, formulate and analyse complex Materials Engineering problems, drawing on mathematics, natural sciences and engineering fundamentals to reach substantiated conclusions.

Design / Development of Solutions

Design systems, components or processes that meet specific needs, accounting for public health and safety, whole-life costs, net zero carbon, and societal and environmental considerations.

Investigation

Conduct in-depth studies of difficult engineering challenges through design of experiments, data analysis and information synthesis to provide reliable results.

Modern Tool Usage

Select, apply and assess contemporary engineering and IT tools — including modelling and prediction techniques — to address complex Materials Engineering problems.

Established in 1978 as Nigeria's first metallurgical training facility, the department has grown over four decades — from three founding staff and fewer than ten students to a comprehensive centre of excellence in Materials Science and Engineering.
